I recently took a trip to Rhinebeck to meet with new clients, a husband and wife duo who made their weekend getaway a permanent escape from New York City life. Connecticut is not too far from the Hudson Valley, but I rarely get to explore the area’s charming small towns so I was so excited to make the trip. Rhinebeck didn’t disappoint. It has a classic “Americana” vibe filled with historic architectural treasures. The town is incredibly laid back and everyone really does know each other. According to my client, New Yorkers & celebrities go to the Hamptons to be seen but they come to the Hudson Valley to disappear. He now walks around Rhinebeck in t-shirts and flip flops all day, a stark contrast to his power suit from his executive days.
After our morning meetings, I had lunch at their restaurant The Amsterdam. The food was incredible. I wouldn’t expect anything less from star chef Alex Burger, a former executive chef from the Daniel Boulud Group in Manhattan. I highly recommend the Potato Gnocchi and the Caesar salad, so so good!
The restaurant itself felt hyper-local but sophisticated. It was designed by a talented design directer at Gensler (and my former mentor at ICRAVE), Siobhan Barry. The main dining room was gorgeous, warm and inviting. Located in an old Dutch townhouse from the 1700’s with exposed steel beams and wood joists. I loved the high ceilings and original fireplaces. The tile work was beautiful. The bar is surrounded by a custom geometric marble pattern sourced from Hudson Tile Supply, and a stunning zinc bar top that becomes the focal piece anchoring the restaurant. Even the blue and white mini mosaic in the bathroom was unique and special. The Windsor chairs add a touch of colonial charm and the antique mirrored tables elevate the overall design.
I can’t wait to go back and explore more of the Hudson Valley. Here are some pictures from my day followed by a must see and do guide to Rhinebeck below. Happy Travels!
