Design Inspiration for your Home Playroom from top Interior Designers
We’ve all been spending a lot of time at home lately, and if you’re like me, you pile on the list of home projects. One of the rooms on the top of my to-do list is my kids playroom. My goal is to turn the playroom into a space that both adults and children love. The biggest mistake I see in kids rooms (this goes for commercial and residential design) is a play space that adults feel terrible in. The colors, the plastic kid furniture, the lack of cohesiveness, these rooms are generally an after thought intended to handle the chaos of messy little hands.
I get that kids can destroy everything. My kiddos do a good job spreading mess everywhere they step. But, I believe that you don’t have to compromise durability for a beautiful aesthetic. Durability is something I deal with everyday when designing hospitality spaces like hotels and restaurants. Trust me, it can be durable and still look great. Below are some of the most beautiful playrooms I’ve ever seen for design inspiration. I love that these designs feel sophisticated and kid friendly at the same time.
Statement Wallpaper
Wallpaper is having a moment. I love wallpaper because it can completely transform a room into a magical environment for kids. You don’t have to do all the walls if you don’t have the budget, but you can do an accent wall like I did in my baby girls nursery. You can read that blog post here.
For a kids space, I like suggesting removable wallpaper to clients and friends. It’s inexpensive, you can hang it yourself if you’re a DIYer and you can easily change it down a couple years down the road when the kids get older.
Here are some of my favorite non-trade wallpaper sources that anyone can purchase from:

Go for a Minimalist Palette
Playrooms don’t have to be traditional bold primary colors – red, yellow & blue. Eventually your kids toys will bring in tons of color, so sometimes its best to stick to neutral or calming tones for the overall palette. I love the blush tones in the design by Sean Anderson below. It feels super sophisticated yet girly and playful at the same time. Any little girl of the young at heart would love to spend time in that room, including me.

Grown Up Decor
One Kings Lane designed the room below for Lucy Liu’s son Rockwell. The interior designer, Nicole, focused on what he and Lucy needed for the space to function—storage, seating, places to get creative, then found items in a soothing color palette that went along with the rest of her home. I think she did such a great job. It doesn’t feel out of place in her home and it can be cleaned up and used as an adult space as well. This is key if you don’t have a designated separate playroom for your children. It might be a room specifically designed for kids, but the design should still speak to the other rooms of the house and the overall sense of style.

How stylish is this room below? This room must have been a huge challenge for the designer because its a playroom/guest room/sitting room all in one. She definitely pulled it all off because it looks so inviting and serves all functions. The sofa acts as a pullout bed and the armoire doubles as toy storage & a makeshift closet. I love the red accents on the walls, rug, and chairs. Red can be an overbearing color, but in this room it works more as a neutral. I also love the beautiful wood armoire to house all the toys and clutter. White is a tricky color for a sofa, but if you want a light color upholstery make sure its stain resistant (like a Sunbrella fabric) or have it professionally stain-proofed. This technology has come a long way and professionals can stain proof without the harsh chemicals that are hazardous to your health. We all want a clean sofa, but safe products are extremely important to me. Especially, in a room for small children.

Playful Patterns
This one seems kind of obvious, but I would highly encourage to use a playful mix of patterns. A kids room is the one space you can push the envelope a bit and have fun with patterns! You might not want to use them in your entire home, but you can experiment with a kids space without fear that it’ll be too overwhelming. Take a look at the rooms below. I love how Prudence Design plays with the same pattern in different monochromatic tones in the furniture and the walls. She brings in color through whimsical drapery and decorative pillows. Ivory Lane’s playroom features a bold Kate Spade polka dot rug on the floor and a star patterned wallpaper on the ceiling. These spaces inspire imaginative play through the thoughtful use of color and pattern. I hope you get inspired to play with the design your kids spaces as well.
